Elder Isaac Benefield Jr. was born on July 23, 1952 in Galveston, Texas to the late Isaac Benefield Sr. and Ella Campbell Benefield. He received his formal education from the pubic school system of Galveston and gradate from Ball High School in 1970. He first attended college at Sam Houston State University on a scholarship, then transferred his scholarship and enrolled at Prairie View A&M and settled at Texas Southern University, studying Physical Education. He excelled in numerous sports such as basketball, football, track, and baseball in high school but notably in college at Texas Southern University as a linebacker. During his junior year of college, he tried out for the Los Angeles Rams NFL team and received a year contract to play.
After college, he worked with mental health patients and Target warehouse in Galveston, Texas. He met and married his wife Dorothy Miles on April 18, 1975 and they had two sons, Isaac Benefield III and Nakia Benefield. The family moved to Waycross, Georgia in 1991 and he worked at Shaffer Security and the Dollar General warehouse.
Elder Benefield was a faithful member of Galilee Baptist Church in Hitchcock, Texas for many years until he moved to Georgia and took membership with St. Paul New Life Outreach Ministries in Waycross, Georgia. He served as Elder of the church with his loving wife, Dorothy, as Marriage Ministers and also on the Finance Department. Elder Benefield, affectionately known as “Ben”, “Junior”, “Ike”, or “Moses” as the children at church often referred to him, served his church until his health no longer allowed him to physically fulfill his duties.
On Tuesday, February 8, 2022, Elder Isaac Benefield Jr. released the cares of the world and entered into peace with his Heavenly Father after an illness. In additional to his parents he was proceeded in death by a brother , Elijah Benefield, his step-brothers, Franklin Benefield, and W.D. Benefield; his step-sisters, Odelia Chester and Vera Porter.
He leaves with precious memories his wife of 47 years, Dorothy (Miles) Benefield; two daughters: Nicole (Byron) Brown and Sarina James; two sons: Isaac (Shawnte’) Benefield Jr, Nakia (Devvie) Benefield; a sister Mae (Charles) Nelson; uncles: Herbert Campbell and Wilson Campbell; aunt: Mary Spencer; father-in-law Almos Miles; brother-in-law Gene (Veronica) Johnson, Terry (Mildred) Miles ; sister-in-law: Patricia (Morris) Brown; special sons: Tracy (Tammi) Bryant and Tyrone Smith; and special daughter: Felecia Leggett ; nephew Charles (Monique) Nelson Jr; grandchildren: Aliyah Benefield, Nakia Benefield, Naia Benefield, Sabrina Washington, Dallas Benefield, Uriah Benefield, Dahvie Benefield and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
