MRS. AVON BESS Obituary

Mrs. Avon Flanigan Bess

Avon Marie Flanigan Bess was born in Springfield, Ohio on January 24, 1953 to Roscoe Flanigan, Sr. and the late Mary Rever Cooper Flanigan. Charlotte, as her family affectionately called her, was raised in Waycross, Georgia and graduated from Waycross High School in 1971.

One of her greatest passions was children, which lead her to choose childcare as a career. She received her associate degree in early childcare and taught until the day she retired.

Avon had several hobbies that she thoroughly enjoyed. Fishing at the pier with her husband Wayne was always relaxing and she looked forward to those trips.   Her love for flowers, both inside and outside, led to beautiful displays of flowers and plants around her home. Her interest in antiques led her to collect many beautiful antiques over the years. Also her love for music would always get her to moving and dancing around. The song “Mustang Sally” was her and “Falisha aka Boonie” favorite song.

However, her main love was her family. She always enjoyed being around her loved ones especially her grandchildren. Although she had only one daughter, God saw her heart was big and needed to be filled. She was blessed with eight grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  She loves them all dearly, but there are a few who hold a special place in her heart. Nicholas is her first great grandchild, whom she calls her son, and Aleecia is her last granddaughter and traveling buddy. It was always Avon’s dream to go to London England and in 2019 she and Aleecia made her dream come true.

She accepted Christ as her personal savior and was a longtime and faithful member of Northside Church of Christ.

Avon departed this life on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. She was preceded in death by her first husband Oscar R. Lowe and her brother Roscoe Flanagan, Jr.

Avon’s love and legacy will be treasured by her husband Wayne Bess; a daughter Nina Flanigan; eight grandchildren whom she helped to raise, (2nd daughter) Falisha Erving (Brandon), Charmain Verner, Darshell Verner, Breanna Verner, Kena Verner, Jabari Verner, Armann Flanigan and Aleecia Fluker; 6 great grandchildren, Nicholas Jordan, Jermaine Verner, Haleigh Hightower, Shahid Jones, Jr., Reilyn Grace and Jimmy Grace; her father, Roscoe Flanigan; one brother, Joseph Watkins (Trina); four sisters, Lela Mae Humphery, Linda Wright, Barbara Stafford and Jackie Jenkins (Carl); a loving step daughter T’Sha Ramos (Roberto) and grandson Corey Ramos; two sisters in law, Cheryl Kitchen (John) and Winder Strickland; two brothers in law, Ralph Bess (Faye) and Tommie Bess (Hazel); five step sisters, Sherlena Watkins (Larry), Junnie Fields (Roy), Leteia Hughley, Felecia Scriven (Michael) and Kim Ferguson (Lifus); one step brother, Ronnie Williams (Patricia); special nieces Andria Askew, Tieosho Askew, Debra Harris (Tony), Priscilla McGhee, Phillip Daniel aka Bro Bull; special friends that are like family to her are Atoia Fluker-Anthony and Carolyn Fluker; she also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.
