MRS. HERMENIA CYNTHIA (MOBLEY) SMITH

October 17, 1931 ~ July 13, 2024 (age 92) 92 Years Old

MRS. HERMENIA SMITH Obituary

Mrs. Hermenia Cynthia Mobley Smith was born on October 17, 1931, in Ware County, Waycross, GA to the late Ed and Pearl Rich Mobley. She was called to eternal rest on July 13, 2024, in Richmond Hill, GA. Where she resided with her children.

Hermenia married Rosebud Smith Jr., who was also an educator, and they worked in various school districts throughout Georgia. They were blessed with five wonderful, loving children who brought them much joy. Her oldest son, Rosebud III, and her husband Rosebud Jr. preceded her in death. Hermenia and Bud, as he was called, were social butterflies, who showed genuine love and care for everyone, and were loved and admired by many.

Hermenia was educated in Waycross' Public School System, graduating from Center High School in 1949. She continued her education at Savannah State College (now Savannah State University), obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, concentrating in Social Studies and English. She obtained a Certification in Middle School and Library Science and Math from Albany State University and pursued further study at Valdosta State University.

Hermenia retired from the Waycross Board of Education. She worked in Troup, Irwin, and Camden Counties prior to her journey to Waycross. She dedicated 32 years of service in education, touching the lives of many young people. She was named to serve on the board as the 6th grade Teacher to draw up the Curriculum for the Middle School and was named Coordinator of the 6th grade.  She was named Teacher of the Year for Alice Street School as well as Center Elementary School . She was also named the Waycross School Systems Teacher of the Year.

Hermenia was deeply involved in her community and actively participated in numerous organizations. Including: NAACP, AARP, Retired Educators, Black Heritage Committee, American Legion Auxiliary and President, Oak Park Community Club. She was also a Board Member of: Concerted Services Policy Council, American Red Cross, Shelter for Abused Women and the Georgia Association of Educators. She was a volunteer for the March of Dimes Mother’s March, Community Cancer and Heart Fund’s, a member of The Jolly Ones social club, and one of the three founding members of The Delta Zeta Chapter of PHI DELTA KAPPA in Waycross.

Hermenia became a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church at an early age, when the church was located across the street, before it became "Greater". She began singing in the choir as a youngster along with the senior choir members, under the pastorate of Rev. W.W. Stephens. She loved her Church, and along with her husband demonstrated this with work, gifts, and deeds.

Hermenia was a past member of: The Board of Trustees, The Board of Stewards, and The Finance Commission. A member of the Mass Choir, a member of the 911 Group who initiated The Elevator Project and, spearheaded a project to pave the "Parking Lot". For a number of years, Hermenia served as the Fundraiser Chairperson.  She was also the organizer and Chairperson of The Rosebud Smith Scholarship for all graduates of the Church and organized Senior Citizen Young at Heart.

A TIME TO MOURN

Hermenia was preceded in death by a son, Rosebud Smith III and Husband, Rosebud Smith Jr. She was also preceded in death by four siblings: Eddie Mae Satterwhite, Lelia Juanita Copeland, Doris Golden, and Henry Mobley.

Alexander Wills, Richmond Hill, GA, Leslie Thomas (Edwin) Savannah, GA, Chloe and Noah Enoch, Richmond Hill, GA. Great-grandchildren; Avery, Ethan, Isabel and Olivia Brown, Aberdeen, NJ, Adrian and London Harmon, Macon, GA, Smith Alexander Wills, Richmond Hill, GA, Craig (CJ) Thomas, Savannah, GA. One Sister, Martha Mobley, Waycross, GA (Baptist Village). A Sister-in-law, Mattie Mobley – Atlanta, GA. Special Nephew, Rev. Gerald Copeland, (Elizabeth), Waycross, GA;.  Special Niece, Mattie McKinnon (Alma, GA). Special Grandniece, Michelle Reid (Waycross, GA).
