A beautiful life is to be celebrated and cherished.
Phyllis Danita Holmes Harris was born August 20,1960, the last of 10 children born to Joseph and Lola Holmes in Homerville, Georgia. After her mother’s death directly after childbirth, Phyllis was raised from infancy by her older sister, Jean and her husband, Obie Halyard, who raised Phyllis as their own.
She was educated in Atlanta Public Schools system attending Southwest High School where Phyllis was a member of the Flag Corp and the Bannerettes. After graduating Southwest in 1978, Phyllis was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Iowa. At her first holiday break, and before she came home to Atlanta for the Christmas break, she called Jean and Obie and told them, “It’s too cold. I’m coming back home to stay”. Phyllis meant what she said and enrolled in West Georgia College in Carrollton, Georgia. She also enrolled in Massey Business College to further her education.
In her early years, Phyllis worked several places in and around Atlanta including and the legendary Hungry Bull restaurant on Campbellton Road. Her siblings, Stanley and Sandra, loved to wait up for Phyllis to come home from that late shift with some delicious steaks and sides. Later she worked many years at Atlanta Journal and Constitution as a lead supervisor for sales. But it was in 2010 when Phyllis found her passion for caregiving. Her concern and affection for the elderly and her natural love of caring for others led her to venture out and become an independent contractor. Phyllis loved her elderly clients, and they loved her! Her warmth and generous heart made caregiving her life’s purpose.
A lifetime of friendship matured into matrimony: Phyllis married the love of her life, Stanley Harris, in July of 2014. Stanley and Phyllis were lovebirds who enjoyed dining out, watching movies, and loved Atlanta’s sports teams, especially the Atlanta Braves and Falcons. Phyllis was a good cook and loved a good party. Anyone who knew Phyllis loved her quick wit and her large personality. She kept everyone entertained and the room was sure to be filled with laughter. Phyllis was fiercely protective of her family and close friends. While Phyllis was an affectionate person, and would talk to anyone, she wouldn’t back down from protecting those she loved. She never met a stranger and would take up for those who didn’t have a voice.
But her total heart belonged to her daughters, Erica and Brittiny. Phyllis was a doting mother who was involved in every aspect of her children’s lives. And when her grandchildren were born, she was the grandmother all children need – full of love but was a disciplinarian ready to dole out swift punishments. She was especially touched when Brittiny named her youngest daughter Lola Jean, in loving tribute and honor of Phyllis’ mother and sister. Phyllis opened her heart to Stanley’s daughter, Maria, who enlarged their family with two more granddaughters, Mekayla and Natalie.
Phyllis’ beautiful life will be celebrated and cherished by her husband, Stanley Harris; two daughters, Erica (Derrick) Allen and Brittiny Metts; grandchildren, Derrick Allen II, Madison Makenzie Metts, Derwin Phillip Allen, Lola Jean Stewart, David J.C. Allen; her siblings, Yvonne Holmes, Janie Holmes, Bessie Watt, Patricia (Xavier) Victor, Joseph Holmes, Benjamin Holmes, Sheryl Halyard, Sandra (Dexter) Jackson, Stanley Halyard; special-son, Wayne Stewart; In-laws, Maude Booker, Arnita Taylor, Rodney Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers, classmates, and friends.
