Queen Esther Charles was born February 10, 1932, in Waresoboro, Ga to the late Sammy Lee Sallet Sr and Rosa Bell Darsaw Sallet. When she was about 3 weeks old her family left Waresoboro and moved to Callahan, Florida. In 1938 they moved from Callahan to Highsprings, Florida. Queen attended public school and played softball. In 1946 they returned to Waycross, but in 1954, Queen left Waycross and moved to Jesup, Ga. Later, that year she met the late William Charles. In 1955 they joined in holy matrimony.
Queen gave her life to Christ during her adult life, and she joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church #2 in Waresoboro, Ga where she was a loyal and dedicated member. She served faithfully as the mother of the Church from 2012 until she became ill 2016. Queen’s hobbies included that of baking her world-famous Peach cobbler that everyone loved, spending time with her family and watching the Young in the Restless, Bold and Beautiful, Guiding Light, the Western, The Heat of the Night and the Texas Rangers.
Queen passed away on Friday October 6, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones. She was preceded in death by both parents, Sammy Lee Sallet Sr and Rosa Bell Darsaw Sallet, her husband William Charles, her siblings Eula Mae Williams, Essie Bell Hargrove, Mozella Burgess, Nettie R Armstrong, and Rutha Mae Denton, her daughter Willie Ruth Black, her granddaughters Pamela Pierre, and Norma Collins, her sisters-in-law Janice Sallet & Mary Ann Sallet.
Those left to cherish her memory, her loving children, Willie Mae Sallet, Waycross, GA; Billy Joe Charles, Waycross, Ga; Eugene Charles, of Tuson Arizona; Mary Charles, Waycross, GA; and Clifford Charles Sr , Waycross, GA; one sister Etta Mae Smith, Waycross, GA; three brothers Sammy Lee Sallet Jr, (Sandy), Frankie Lee Sallet Sr, and James Edward Sallet all of Waycross, GA; 15 grandchildren; 40 Great grand children 42 Great great grandchildren, & 3 great, great, great grandchildren; a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends that will miss her dearly.
