Steve Willie McKnight, Jr. was born May 28, 1943, in Jesup, Georgia to Steve Willie McKnight, Sr. and Louise Ogden McKnight Strickland. Steve attended the public schools of Wayne County.
On December 19, 2022, he transitioned this life at Pruitt Crestwood Nursing Home under the care of Pruitt Health Hospice, Valdosta. After contracting COVID, he failed to recover from its long-term neurological effects. Do your part and stop the spread!
Steve was raised under religious teachings of his grandparents, the late George and Mamie Bennett, at Morning Star Baptist Church, Homerville. To encourage his faith, Brother Steve welcomed parishioners of Jehovah’s Witness into his home. He accepted the spiritual comfort of hospice chaplains.
Steve dedicated his labor to Langdale Lumber Yard, Homerville for many years. He hauled lumber for Pearson and Son, Waycross and Conner Trucking, Homerville. He logged in thousands of miles as a CDL truck driver making friends with all he met. Steve became permanently disabled after a logging truck accident in 2001.
He earned the nickname, “Crutch” by those who knew and loved his gentle, sweet caring spirit. Steve was someone to lean on in times of need or trouble; he shared his last dollar as a “cheerful giver.” He enjoyed watching his favorite shows: The Price is Right, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, WALB News, and westerns. Imagine a quiet, humble man whose favorite theme song and movie was “Bad Boys; how he would dance!” Steve loved them national champion Georgia Bulldogs, world champion Atlanta Braves, and Rise Up Atlanta Falcons!
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, in addition to sisters – Elouise Strickland, Dorothy Cobb, Mary Strickland, Sarah Weatherspoon, and Ida Mae Rawls, brothers – Alfonso McKnight, James, McKnight, and Jessie Strickland; grandsons – Curtis Johnson and Clay Cross.
He leaves to cherish his memories: Daughters - Sabra Wright of Jesup, Dr. Ronda (Lindsay) Scott of Valdosta, Tennille (Leroy) Moss of Montgomery AL, and a devoted son/caregiver – Reggie (Lakisha) Edmond of Homerville; sons and daughter he raised: Michael (Valentine) Edmond, Ronnie (Heavenly) Edmond, Nina Edmond Burkes, all of Homerville; his sisters – Delois Gordon of Waycross, brothers Joe Nathan McKnight of Orlando FL and Daryl Strickland of Waycross; brother in law – Willie Weatherspoon; Sisters in law- JoAnn Strickland and Rosa McKnight; 14 grandchildren; mothers of endearment – Charlie Mae Cross, JoAnn Ratliff, and the late Alice Edmond McKnight; compassionate caregivers at Pruitt Crestwood Nursing Home and Pruitt Health Hospice; and special friend – Cathy Webb and Cindy Corbitt at Clinch Banking, Homerville, and a host of sorrowing friends.
