Ms. Romona Anita Battle, 74, transitioned to her heavenly home peacefully December 13, 2025.
Born December 31, 1950 in Manhattan, New York, Ms. Battle was reared in Waycross, Georgia by her loving parents, Mrs. Annie Laurie Simmons Battle and Mr. Conley Napoleon Battle, whom she greatly adored.
Ms. Battle was a member of Historical First African Baptist Church, formerly known as Antioch First Baptist Church in Waycross.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Conley Napoleon Battle (Annie Laurie).
Ms. Battle is survived by her daughter, Dinah Cianci Myrick (Shiron), and granddaughter Madisyn A’lari Myrick, and other relatives, including special cousins; William Simmons, (Patricia), Lilly Simmons Taylor, Suzette Taylor, and cherished friends; Carolyn Fluker, Louise Montgomery, Connie Bussey, and Clarence Billups, as well as her beloved sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Ms. Battle was a graduate of Center High School (class of 1969), Morris Brown College, (Bachelor of Arts in History, Minor in Secondary Education), and Alabama State University (Masters and Education Specialist in Elementary Education) along with her educational leadership certification from Augusta College.
She was an educator in Ware County, Richmond County, and in Waycross City School Systems serving in various capacities, including an elementary, middle (magnet school), and high school teacher, lead teacher, part-time counselor and an assistant principal. She, also, served as a consultant for the South Central Georgia Learning Resource System, (GLRS) and Okefenokee Regional Educational Services agency (RESA).
Prior to retiring, with 30 years in education (June 30, 2006), Ms. Battle was the Early Intervention Program Director (along with other duties) in the Ware County School System.
Ms. Battle received numerous prestigious awards in education, including a listing in Who’s Who in American Education, a member of the Governor’s School Leadership Institute, Teacher of the Year for the Waycross Public School System, and Teacher of the Year for Crawford Street Elementary School. Sorority awards included Achievement Awards in Education (local and regional) and a Citation Award from the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Sorority Inc., Delta Zeta Chapter.
After retiring in 2006, she served on various community organizations/ committees, including the Satilla Health Foundation Board, Center High School Gala Committee, Historical Preservation Committee, Okefenokee Heritage Center-Board of Trustees, Hazzard-Hill Branch CDC, Oak Street Festival and Community Easter Egg Hunt. In addition to her service through Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Chi Gamma Omega Chapter, Ms. Battle also was a member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Delta Zeta Chapter, earning the honor of Soror of the Year in both organizations. Other notable awards from Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. included Achievement Awards in Education (local and regional) and a Citation Award.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 18th at 11:00 A.M. at First Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Waycross with Reverend Raymond Williams officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 17th from 4-6 P.M. at Fluker Funeral Home. Visitors are being received at her daughter’s home, 500 Bay Street, Waycross, GA.
