Mother Julia Mae Cooper Holmes life on the earth begun June 5, 1930 in Ocilla (Irwin County), Georgia to the late Ben Cooper and Wealthy Sessoms Cooper. She grew up in Waycross (Ware County), Georgia where she received her formal education from the Waycross Public School System and graduated from Center High School in 1948.
Mother Holmes accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and joined First Born Church of the Living God under leadership of the late bishop H.J. Echols. Mother Holmes later joined Faith of God Ministry under the leadership of Bishop Larry Atkinson where she worked diligently and faithfully in establishing the usher ministry and pastor Aide Ministry. She was the oldest church Mother at the time of her demise.
Mother Holmes was well known throughout the community for her warm welcome smile and affectionate greeting while serving on the City Wide usher Ministry for thirty plus years. She served in the capacity of president, vice president and remained a honorary City Wide Usher after her health declined.
She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Leroy Alfred Holmes in 1949. This union was blessed with seven children
The doors of her home always swung on the hinges of love where you always find a warm bed, a good hot meal or a piece of her famous cream pound cake.
Late Tuesday Night June 29, 2021 god called her to her heavenly home. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death a daughter, Verna J. Pack,; a son, Leroy W. Holmes; a grandson, Charles Anthony Holmes ll; a great grandson Chase Goodman; siblings Queen Faison, Earnestine Adam, Eva Muffett ,Ruth Hicks, Jay Daniel Cooper, Pearlie Cooper, Milton Cooper, Alexander Cooper Sr. and Elijah Cooper.
Those left to cherish her memory include five children: Julia Denise Walker, Phoebe Dumbar, Vanessa F. McCurry, Edward Holmes (Debra)Charles Holmes (Carol); fourteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; ten great great grandchildren; a brother Deacon Eddie Lee Cooper (Cora); numerous of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service for Mother Holmes will be held Monday July 5, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith of God Holiness 1509 R.L. McGee Drive Waycross with her pastor, Bishop Larry Atkinson, bring words of comfort. Public visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fluker Funeral Home 985 Ossie Davis Parkway, Waycross. Interment will be in Hazzard Hill cemetery.
