Mother Maxine W. Porter, age 90, transitioned from this life on Thursday morning, December 3, 2020 at her residence in Waycross, GA, after a recent illness. She was the proud daughter of the late Otis D. Williams Sr. and Rebecca Cobb Williams. She was born February 27, 1930 in Hoboken, Georgia. She met and married the late Columbus Porter, Sr. They moved to Waycross at an early age and this union was blessed with ten children.
Mother Porter joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Waycross at an early age where she sang in the choir and later became the lead mother of the church. She served in various capacities in the church throughout her life. She was involved in many organization and clubs in the community to include The Ocean Star Chapter #183 Order of the Eastern Star in which she served as worthy matron for many years.
She was employed with the Waycross Public School System for numerous years from which she retired. Mother Porter was a caring, loving, vibrant and energetic individual. She was a devoted wife and mother and dedicated in all her endeavors.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two infant children, a son Columbus (Duke) Porter Jr. and ten siblings.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, John W. Porter (Willie Rene) of Waycross, GA, Shirley Ann Porter of Waycross, GA, Bennie Mae Porter-Brown of Newberry, S.C., Johnny Lee Porter Sr. (Cora) of Waycross, GA, Ernest Porter of Waycross, GA, Sheila Porter-Bailey of Byron, GA, Kenneth Porter of Waycross, GA.: sixteen grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren; thirty-six great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday December 12, 2020 at 12 p.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 864 Oak St., Waycross, GA, with Rev. Fer-Rell M. Malone, Sr., pastor of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, giving words of comfort.
Public visitation will be held Friday, December 11th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. to the hour of service at the church. Interment will be at Hazzard Hill Cemetery.
Final and most sacred arrangements are entrusted to the professional care of Fluker Funeral Home, 985 Ossie Davis Parkway, Waycross, GA.
