Mr. George Flournoy Obituary

Brother George Atlas Flournoy was born January 30, 1931 in Baxley, GA to the late Ettie Mae Bridges and George Washington Flournoy.

He grew up in Waycross, Georgia where he received his formal education from the Waycross Public Shool System and graduated from Center High School in 1948 where he was an outstanding basketball player. After graduating, he enrolled in North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, NC, where he met the love of his life, Elsie Walker. He was known as “Sugar Boy” Flournoy and was a superb artist. While in college, George was drafted in the Army and served in the Korean Conflict. In 1954, he married Elsie Walker and moved to Waycross, GA. Together, they had four children: Donna, Atlas, Ahmad and Vada.

George was an early entrepreneur and ran several small businesses. For over 60 years, George was the owner and operator of “Esquire Barbershop”. He was a pillar of his community and the barbershop was a place where everyone was welcome. He was a good friend to all and would do anything to give back to his community. George also owned a club in Waycross in the early 60’s.

George departed this life on Friday, May 28, 2021 after an illness. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by wife, Elsie Walker Flournoy and oldest son, Atlas Flournoy.

He leaves a beautiful family to cherish his legacy: one daughter, Donna Flournoy Nevins of Jonesboro, GA; two sons, Ahmad Flournoy (Bonita) of McDonough, GA and Vada Flournoy of Jonesboro, GA; grandchildren; Nahshon Hughley, Krista Nevins, Aja Flournoy, Shaina Flournoy and Candice Alick; three great-grandchildren; a cousin, Betty Braxton, her children, Arleta and Scottie; and a host of cherished family and friends.
