Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Ellis

Ms. Helen Elizabeth Ellis passed away peacefully on April 22, 2022 after a brief illness. She was born September 18, 1925 to George and Anna (Morgan) Ellis.  A lifelong resident of Waycross, Georgia, she received her early education in the local public schools system and graduated from Center High School in 1943. She attended the Grady School of Nursing in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1946.

When hospitals were segregated, Nurse Ellis, as she was affectionately known  by many of the patients that she chare for and friends, worked for many years at the Atlantic Coastline Hospital, and the Ware County Hospital. After integration, she continued her work at the new Memorial Hospital, working as a charge nurse until her retirement in 1987.  She was a lifelong member of Historic Antioch First Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities and was appointed Mother of the Church in 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving son Dr. Robert T. Bussey, and her siblings, George Taylor Ellis and Anna M. Cooper, and her niece Charlene Cooper Burse.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter-in-law, Connie M. Bussey, two loving granddaughters, Robyn N. Bussey (Antonio) and Cheryl Bussey Burden (Marcus), three adorable great-grandchildren that she loved and cherished: Morgan, Mason and Kemp, her nephew Wayne “Doc” Ellis, her nieces Rose C. Glass and Susan E. Cooper, and a host of relatives and friends that will miss her dearly..

A graveside service will be held Thursday  at 11: 00 a.m.  April 28, 2022 in Hazzard Hill Cemetery, Waycross, Georgia with her pastor, Rev. Raymond C. Williams Sr., bring words of comfort.. Public visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fluker Funeral Home 985 Ossie Davis Parkway.
