Mrs. Odessa McVay Obituary

Sis. Odessa Magdalene Porter McVay was born on October 13, 1939 in Lenox, Georgia under the union of Erskey and Carrie Kelley Porter. She was the fifth of seven children.

She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was religiously affiliated with Friendship Baptist Church in Waycross, Georgia.  Odessa was educated in the Ware County Public School System and graduated from Center High School in 1958. After graduating, she moved to San Diego, California. There, she met, fell in love and married Odell Samuel McVay.  Under this union, four children were born. Odessa was a loving wife and mother; she devoted her life to caring for the needs of her family.

Odessa attended vocational school in San Diego, California and worked in various capacities as a military wife. In 2004, she retired from the State of Georgia after 26 years of service.

Odessa’s life reflected Ephesians 4:32, “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.” She gave of herself freely and loved unconditionally. Her love of cooking and baking allowed her to  minister and provide support and comfort to her family, friends, neighbors and community.

Odessa departed this life on February 14, 2021 at the age of 81 after a courageous battle with cancer. Throughout this journey, she was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy. She was preceded in death by her parents Erskey and Carrie Porter; siblings, Alice “Jack” Porter, Eva Moore, Wallace Porter, Leo Porter, Eddie Lee Porter, Ludie Mae Borden; nephew Theodtis “Tucker” Jones; niece, Debbie Porter;  grandchildren, Jamel Le’Andre Moore, Jimmy “Boss” LeErskey Moore, and Isis Nephytys Juanita McVay.

She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Trayce McVay; three sons, Odell McVay, Dale “Moochie” McVay (Tanisha), and Darrell “Bunny” McVay; twelve grandchildren, Tiffany McVay, Keifer Williams, Jekara McVay, Jakevia Chapple, Latoria Robinson, Dayanna Odessa McVay, Dale McVay, Jr, Darius McVay, Dalena McVay, Jasmine Vega, Lacey Vega, and Zayku Vega; FOUR great grandchildren, Jahmiere Green , King Preston, Vantavious Brinson and Zaniya McVay; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
